The Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, this album may look closer to a challenging university examination rather than a new popular music album from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international pop icon. Broken into 4 separate movements and sung in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, frequently via the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long roll call of contributors. The pure ambition by itself renders the work of other artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to transcend overly academic posturing is nearly a miracle, with sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not her first album to fuse the past with the present, its scale are much higher here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she is breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines brightly on a stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds down like comedic impact. The track immediately segues to the wild track driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album is that you never exactly know—nor want to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly every track ends in a completely distinct place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and sinister, with prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act of Lux is navigating the line between radical innovation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. This trick is echoed by another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish feast where the characters around the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flit between conversations about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
