"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have also coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international following.

But Haim will always be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
